Bash: “Will you risk it all with
me?”
Much better. The previous
episode left me so disappointed that I wasn’t eager to watch the next one. Like
at all. Skeptical at first, I was laughing like an idiot by the end of it. You
have to agree, it was fun, especially with all the doom and gloom lately. I
don’t remember when was the last time I laughed so hard watching Reign.
Probably not since Catherine and Henry were scrubbing blood off the castle’s floor.
How ironic, considering circumstances.
I think the theme of the
episode was trust and risks we take when we trust someone with our secret or
our life. Mary while obviously embarrassed showed some respect to Don Carlos
when he shared his secret with her, to her credit she turned him down at first
not because of his specific sexual desires, but because it was all he needed
from marriage, and Mary obviously wanted something more. And then she
completely blew it. Not only did she talk to Catherine about it, she let her
into the room to punish the Spanish prince instead of her. Come on, Mary! You
could have done it yourself.
I’m inclined to let it
slide, because it lead us the most hysterical scene of the episode. With Don Carlos enjoying a good flogging
at Catherine’s hand who didn’t hold back and Mary voicing over in between the
lashes – boy, it was fun. What happened next was even more funny and tragic.
How would Catherine and Mary explain being in his room? How would he explain
the piece of wood still strapped to his body? Will he even be able to? There
was way too much blood for him to survive. I guess, one thing is for sure, there
isn’t going to be any marriage.
Catherine’s love-hate relationships
with Mary, is one of the things I love about this show. Unpredictable like
weather and ever-changing like woman’s mood. They have been friends, allies,
rivals, enemies and friends again. It constantly amazes me how they can move
past some horrible things they’ve done and said to each other and then turn
around and be the best support one can possibly want. What a rollercoaster.
Fascinating.
Gideon a.k.a Elizabeth’s spy makes his
first steps at French court by meddling in Mary’s relationship with Don Carlos,
not that he needed to worry, Mary botched that one all on her own. Gideon came
to Mary’s rescue when she hurt herself during that stupid and rather childish
game. I must say he has more chemistry with Mary than poor almost dead Don
Carlos. Their banter while he was carrying her in the woods was a much needed
delight and gave me some hope as to where things are going.
Bash and Delphine are still
searching for the killer but finding only his victims. After having another
premonition (I don’t quite know how to call her ‘gift’), Delphine followed the
‘scent’ of the killer to Greer’s tavern and to Greer herself as a possible
target. I swear, I thought Greer will die. Then, I though Delphine will die.
What the heck happened there? Did she siphoned killer’s anger? We also very conveniently
weren’t shown his face, that’s on two occasions now. Is it someone we know?
Now that Delphine ‘took’
some of the killer’s murderous instinct, she is afraid of hurting Bash, but he
is asking her to take the risk and stay anyway. I’m warming up to this couple.
Narcisse, you little weasel!
How very nicely played. Not that he had to do much work, Catherine practically
gave him all the necessary power. Is Narcisse in cahoots with Vatican and the Cardinal lied about
the state of Francis’ liver? I bet he did, since we know for a fact that
Francis wasn’t poisoned. Nostradamus himself made the tests and he wouldn’t
have lied. Again, well done, Lord Narcisse! Enjoy it, while you can, because
I’m sure it won’t last. Narcisse as Regent will be taken as a bad joke by other
countries and France
can’t afford that.
While we discussing
Narcisse, let’s stop at his personal life for a minute. I was the one rooting
for Narcisse and Lola, they used to be so passionate and their relationships
were so forbidden and disapproved by many it made it more hot. Now they are
domesticated and boring. “Lola. I made a vow to you. Do you not
believe that I can honor it?” he actually said with a straight face. She is
insecure, he’s cheating and lying through his teeth, it’s not gonna end well.
Historical bits
Anna of Austria was
mentioned on numerous occasions – she ended up being the wife of Don Carlos in
real life.
Needless to say that
Catherine de Medici was the one and only Regent on behalf of her son Charles.
Some observations
No England.
Is Leith still in love with Greer? I got that impression
from their little chat.
Greer is
pregnant and she is quite far along…. Who is the father? Is it that pirate?
I noticed
that Don Carlos looked a lot like Conde.
Wardrobe department
The “Best Dress of the week”
Award goes to Mary’s beautiful gown
Greer’s dresses remain hideous,
and now we know why, but she still gets the “Worst Dress of the week” Award.
Memorable Quotes:
Greer: “Life
is full of surprises, and what we make of them is up to us.”
Despite bad
ratings, Reign has been renewed for a fourth season.
Sol’s rating: 3 out of 5.
