Mary: “We were supposed to dance
under the stars”
Well, that was heartbreaking
and, if you really think of it, absolutely unnecessary. And here is why…
There has to be some movement, the plot has to go somewhere, preferably
forward, but certainly not backward. With this one we got back to right where
we were at the end of previous episode. Only two things happened
during this one: Francis died, got revived and died
again. Mary has signed away her claim to English throne and then changed her
mind. That’s what I call a zero movement.
Why did we need to go through all that just to get to the same point B,
only 41 minutes later? Did we really need one more beautiful sailing scene? We’ve
had those before. Did we need another happy moments between Francis and Mary? We’ve
done this already. If the point was to break our hearts with yet another
goodbye scene of Mary and Francis, there was really no need for that. Their
scene in previous episode was a very powerful one. Who would come up with such
a cruel idea of a reset?
When the episode began I had a crazy thought that Francis did die and
this is some kind of hallucination or vision of sorts. Because it was a bit
unreal and on a fairy side. I couldn’t decide whether it is Mary’s dream or Francis’.
It turned out it was the reality at its best. Come to think of it Francis
cheated death once before. Delphine saved Bash and Francis almost paid a price,
but Bash quickly killed poor Clarissa and death retreated for awhile. Here,
Francis cheated death again, but it still caught up with him. When he was dying
in the forest Mary mentioned Delphine’s name but thank god Francis stopped her
before Reign turned into ‘Final destination 7’.
Mary promised Francis to stay in France until Catherine’s regency is
secured. So that means Don Carlos can go wed Anna of Austria, but where does
that leave Mary? Logically she has to go to Scotland and finally be the Queen
of her country. Because if she stays in France, what is she? She didn’t
give France
an heir, so she is no longer a Queen. Unless that whole swimming in the lake and making love was
a way to make Mary pregnant…. Hm.. Would they do that?
Thank you, Toby Regbo for a wonderful and powerful portrayal of King
Francis II. Hats off to you and the best of luck!
Historical bits
The accord that they have signed here in reality was called the Treaty of
Edinburgh, but the terms were basically the same: France
and England agreed to
withdraw troops from Scotland
and France would recognize Elizabeth’s right to rule England. Also, as was shown in this
episode, Mary refused to ratify the treaty.
Catherine: “St. Anthony - the patron saint of pregnant women.”
He is not, at least I couldn’t find it. There is Saint Anthony
of Padua the
patron saint of finding things or lost people, and there is also Saint Anthony who is appealed to
against infectious diseases, particularly skin diseases.
Some observations
No England.
So Mary was so happy Francis was back from the dead that she didn’t feel
even a tiny bit of guilt regarding her mother’s death. Wow! So, I take it she
didn’t even go to the funeral?
I thought they would keep it a secret, how
exactly Francis got better, especially about the reviving part, but no, they
were talking about it repeatedly. How very not careful.
Delphine and Bash are now working together to
hunt the killer using Delphine’s acute senses. They are no longer bound to each
other, but they are together now. I think.
Nostradamus showed up to give his killing
prophecy and left giving yet another one: Catherine will get what she wants but
only with Mary’s help. Was that a real prophecy, or was he just helping Mary out?
Wardrobe department
The “Best Dress of the week” Award goes to Mary. She was absolutely
stunning in that white dress, but I also liked the other one.
The “Worst Dress of the
week” Award goes to Greer. She is a Madame, shouldn’t her dresses be like a bit
more colorful, she’s always dressed in dark. Lately it seems like she is wearing one dress all the
time.
Memorable Quotes:
Francis: “I will not hide here waiting for a dream of my death. I'm not being reckless, I'm
living my life. And if you could see what I see... The colors, they're so much
brighter than before, and every moment, every emotion. I do know that I want to
spend every day sailing with Mary until the snows come…”
Sol’s rating: no rating for this one, but it
was very heartbreaking.
