Greer: “What odd turns
our lives have taken.”
Well, to be entirely honest, I’m not quite sure what has happened here. One thing is clear - everything has so drastically changed since Mary and
her four ladies in waiting came to France. Also, things seem to have come
full circle.
I think my favorite part was Narcisse and Charles trying to win money at
the casino. Back in 16th century, being a king didn’t mean wealth
and luxury. That came later, with Louis XIV. But Catherine de Medici had to fight with claws and teeth during the reign of her sons to stay in
power. Her royal children knew that all too well. And though here it was
Narcisse fighting for France
with claws and teeth, quite literally, pun intended, it was Charles quick
thinking that keeps amazing me. He would have been a great king, had his mother
or her past not been in his way.
The second the generals made a toast I had a thought they were all gonna
die, but I dismissed it. I shouldn’t have. The Red Knights sure know how to
plan the revenge. This one was particularly good. They didn’t need to do much,
just lace few specific glasses with poison and wait for the people to do the
job.
France is certainly not the safest place for a royal. Mary might get her things
quickly and head to Scotland.
Who cares that the welcome will be freezing, considering how hot it is getting
in France.
Which bring me to a perpetual question that I ask regularly: Will we ever go
there? Can we, finally? Please?
Now would be a good time. Mary can’t stay in France
forever or any longer, sooner or later she has to come back to Scotland. Plus
this year Reign proved they can split the story between two courts, so why not
three?
As much as I want this, there is a huge problem with this plan. It would
eliminate French court from the story completely, because after Mary’s
departure they will be able to continue her never ending duel with Elizabeth, but historically there shouldn’t be any
interactions with France.
And I’m not ready to say ‘good bye’ to Catherine and Charles, and Narcisse for
that matter.
There was however a quite real and permanent goodbye. Greer who fought so
bravely for her independence is settling now with a man she doesn’t love (not
really!) and she is leaving behind everything she’s built here. Oh, I
understand perfectly why she is doing it, she wants a better future for her
child, and still, I would prefer she stayed, with a pirate. It seemed like a
cop out, an easy way to get rid of her. And if this was a goodbye to Greer, how
come Leith wasn’t even there?
It was not the only thing that puzzled me. What's up with that ember of big love
that still remains… Lord Castleroy found it in his heart for Greer, and it
seems like Bash has found that same ember for Mary, considering he decided to
move to Scotland
with her. Are we to believe he is still in love with her? What about Delphine?
Also, I’m not sure what was
accomplished at English court in this one, aside from an observation that
Robert wasn’t Elizabeth’s
true love and the shenanigans behind the accusation against her mother. Lola is really useless – she
can’t even plant a necklace properly, but she has obviously grown close to Elizabeth and vice versa.
What does that even mean in a great scale of things? What will it lead to? The
two queens were never anywhere close to truce?! Oh, well.
Historical bits
The charges against Anne Boleyn included adultery, incest and treason. There were rumors that she was accused
of witchcraft (just as Elizabeth
mentioned in this one), but this charge was not however mentioned in the
indictments.
I believe, Lady Beatrice Somerset,
was born in the writers room as she did not exist in real life.
Some observations
Good casting on the actress who played Anne Boleyn in the opening scene,
the resemblance was spot on.
Wardrobe department
Again, the Queens wore marvelous dresses…
and so did Lola, but the “Best Dress of the week” Award goes to Elizabeth. This one was simply stunning.
The “Worst Dress of the week” Award goes to Lady Somerset.
What the heck was that?
What the heck was that?
Memorable Quotes:
Mary: “My life is once again the sum of my choices,
not someone else's crimes.”
Narcisse: “I am just the fool you're looking
for.”
Considering how things
are, he is the fool and will probably die for it.
Sol’s rating: just
barely a 3.
