Grimm: 5x01 “The Grimm Identity”

“It is not light that we need, but fire.”

Nick: “Juliette's dead. They took her body. They grabbed Trubel. They took my mom's head. I don't know what the hell's going on.”

Welcome back Grimmsters!
It’s season 5!

In keeping with tradition Nick’s house got trashed (though less than usually), but this time it was cleaned up by the FBI standards, they even took the body and body parts, even if Trubel was all they were after. Where was Nick? He was drugged and what a wacky chloroform that was!

The dream sequence or shall we call it hallucination under the influence was beautiful and disturbing at the same time. Loved the noir touch to it, Kelly’s head flying around not so much. Poor Nick. Everyone was asking him to slow down, but I understand perfectly why he was rushing through this episode as if he was on fire, because I suspect if he stopped for a second and let himself truly realize what just happened, he might have gone on fire literally.

It felt a bit odd that pretty much everyone was skeptical and almost not believing Nick when he described the events of the night and named the FBI lady as a suspect. Why? It’s not like what he was saying was so improbable, especially for the Grimmverse.  If felt a bit out of characters. Oh, well…..

So let’s take a look at this secret government organization, that Chavez is part of. I don’t think it’s the FBI per se, none of the guys killed at the end were on her team. So, it could be that she just worked there and used its resources, but THE organization itself is an entirely different entity. Its goals are yet to be determined, but one thing is clear - they seem to need Grimm on their side to fight these creepy creatures “that are rising everywhere and coming to Portland”  and capable of scratching the concrete wall of the building like it was made of chocolate.

I can’t recall for sure, but I don’t think Grimm has ever surprised the hell out of me. Until this episode. My jaw literally dropped when I saw Chavez with no one other than Meisner. Them working together on this seemed odd, yet very appropriate and somehow tied everything in a little bow. If only I could figure out why or how.

Meisner was with the Resistance that mainly fought against the Royals, now all of a sudden he is part of this new organization. It is however a nice turn of events and it is very interesting!

So, who do you think is behind that reinforced door in the presumably underground prison? With Meisner being there, could it be Diana? Since we did not see Juliette die (not really!), could it be her? It is safe to say that it is probably not Trubel, or is it not? Also there were too many cells for it to be a place to hold just one prisoner.

One thing is for sure - this secret organization’s security is either really bad (which is surprising considering the high-tech prison) or they have a leak – someone spilled the info about location of the meeting and they all ended up dead, including Chavez. At least she left Nick the means of communication with Meisner.

Last season I was complaining that they all have given up on Juliette so fast and without much regret (except for Nick), and here I was furious when Monroe said it was either Nick or Juliette who had to die. Surely they are very resourceful and had they tried harder maybe it would have been enough to help Juliette. So I was glad when Rosalee made a point that not all of it was Juliette’s fault. Someone had to say it.

Now, the last but not the least, let’s talk about the couple to be. At least I think they are taking us and them down this road. The scene with Nick and Adalind at the hospital was very bittersweet, but more sweet than bitter. Looking at them, I realized that I don’t mind. Those two have a very rocky and dramatic past, to say the very least, but the dynamic is very strong and there is chemistry between the actors, I would argue that David has more chemistry with Claire, than he had with Bitsie.

Some observations

I did not catch the number of the episode, but that is a tradition for season opener, still can’t figure out the tradition part though – is it ‘me not seeing it’ or them not embedding it’.

The famous key is still in the opening credits. I already totally forgot what’s it for, but I remember it being very important at one point and I remember Rosalee hiding it in the Spice Shop. Will we ever get the rest of that story?

Royals seemed to have retreated, at least for now and foreseeable future. The lawyers have requested Kenneth body to be sent back home. Do they know the king is dead? Anyway, they have other things to worry about.

Nick has a son and his name is Kelly. How very considered of you Adalind!

Will Adalind now move in with Nick? She can’t stay at Bud’s forever. Not that I mind, Bud is always fun.

Memorable Quotes:

Bud:  “I'm so glad you didn't miss it. I was in for all of mine. It's really something to see. And hear, actually. The language is something you're never gonna forget.”

Sol’s rating:  4 for this opener. Not bad at all!
