Grimm: 3x14 "Mommy Dearest"

“I am going off to a house and entering it like a snake…
I will devour their babes and make their hearts ache. ”
Wu: “What the hell is that?”

Grimm is not a horror television. It is somewhat scary, but it is not horror. I remember I found pilot to be quite frightening, but they have dialed it down a bit since then. Having said that, this wesen could easily give nightmares, it and a scary baby.

There were rumors they would bring Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio as Mama-Grimm back at some point, so when I saw the title of the episode in my calendar I thought that was it. Boy, I couldn’t be any more off. ‘Mommy dearest’ turned out to be a woman willing to take the life of her unborn grandchild just to prolong her own. It just couldn’t get any worse.

As the episode went along I kept thinking, is this gonna be the one in which Wu learns about Wesen? Could it be really happening? Yay! We haven’t had an episode centered on Wu since season one “Island of Dreams”. So, it was about time we had another one and what an opportunity it was to let him in on a Big secret.

Now, is there really a good way to introduce someone to the world of Wesen? Perhaps not, as Hank put it. They [writers] seem however to follow the same pattern here. With Hank it was the daughter of a close friend, with Wu it’s a girl that got away, who he deeply cares about and probably still loves. Is it easier to accept the supernatural aspects of life when people you love are involved? Maybe. We were told several times, that people [I can not for the life of me spell out the wesen term] only see wesen, when they let them to, but like in the case of Hank, Wu saw the creature, without it revealing herself. Is fear for people you love is what lifting the veil?

I like Wu a lot. I want him in the inner circle. I loved how he tried to convey his suspicions to Nick and Hank even if it made him sound crazy. Unfortunately those two didn’t return him the favor. I understand Nick wants to protect his identity, but these were rather extreme circumstances. Is it really wise to keep Wu in a dark, with them encountering wesens on a regular basis? Hank is probably the only one who understands what Wu is going through, and still even he couldn’t come with words when he had a chance.

Right until the moment Wu was attacked by Aswang, I thought they will cop out and write it all off to him “worrying to much about Dana”, but after he saw the mommy with his own eyes, I was sure they would tell him. They didn’t. But it is not the end just yet since they left on a rather disturbing note. Now, tell me, did last scene really happen or was it a dream?  It had to be a dream, right?

As if Aswang monster wasn’t enough, we had a freaky baby. What’s up with writers? How on earth they come with ideas like hurting a pregnant woman and getting “Rosemary’s baby” into a story? I hate the plots with evil babies.

Anyway, the baby is born. It’s a girl. Nothing too horrible [aside from those sparky purple eyes] happened as was prophesied in the last episode. Not yet, anyway. Immediately after giving birth Adalind returned to her hexenbiest form, but we knew that was gonna happen. It’s Sean very sweet reaction to the news about a baby girl that made this whole sub-plot bearable.

Some observations

Grimm added yet another language to its cookie jar as Wu and his cousin spoke Filipino (at least I assume that’s what it was).

How Wu was able to have a nightmare about a creature he’s never seen before?

Wu’s room in the psychiatric clinic was 314. That was 40 minutes into the episode and I was so caught up into it that I thought I missed it. I didn’t.

Was it the first time we heard sergeant’s Wu first name? I believe it was.

Aswang – such a beautiful name for such a horrible creature.

Memorable Quotes:

Wu: “Sometimes my cat gets mad at me, and all she needs is a belly rub.”
Franco: “My wife's not a cat.”
Wu: “It doesn't mean it wouldn't work.”

Juliette: “This could be almost anything that climbs trees, bigger than a squirrel, obviously.”

Monroe: “Yeah, I have an aunt and Uncle that used to eat their newborns' placentas, you know, fry 'em up with a little butter and honey.  But I'm sorry. This is going too far.”
I don’t know about that, what his uncle is doing sounds equally horrific to me.

Nick: “"I arrive in the Philippines at Manila, May of 1904, after a long arduous voyage from..."
Hank: “Do we have to start at the beginning?”
Monroe: “Yeah, pick it up right before the "and then I cut off his head" part.”

Monroe: “I don't think an Aswang is a very good gateway wesen for a Kehrseite.”
Hank: “I'm not sure there is a good gateway.”

Sol’s rating: That was quite good. 3.5 out of 5? What did you think?
