Grimm: 2x22 “Goodnight, Sweet Grimm”

“And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest”
Nick: “You get the feeling we just walked into a trap?

Lots of attention is paid to a season finale. Stakes and expectations are higher than ever. It is the episode that could turn the scale either way and be a decisive factor as to whether one will tune in next fall or not. So as a season finale this one definitely had a lesser impact than season one finale.

Show of hands: How many of you knew who the fake passport and the death certificate were for? Everyone? It was very obvious, wasn’t it? Who else could it be? Granted for few minutes I thought it was going to be Renard, but after the two brothers met and nothing major happened I realized that Eric came to Portland for something else or rather for someone else.
The major hint that it was going to be Nick was the fact that Baron’s deathlike trance could be reversed.
So Royal Families plan was to abduct Grimm. And do what? I suspect not to kill him, or series would end right there. Will they be torturing him in hope to get their hands on the key as they did torture those crusaders centuries ago? Does it mean next season will be set in Austria? I guess we’ll have to wait and see. Also so far we only heard Renard’s side of the story, but Grimms have been known to work for Royal Families before, so it make sense to finally bring them onto the light from the background and actually see for ourselves what they are. And if it turns bad for Nick the advantage he has is that no one knows he is working with Captain Renard and that they know about each other.

Speaking of which Renard is fascinating character. He is so completely honest with Nick, so truthfully laying out all the cards in front of him, working slowly into gaining his complete trust, yet remembering not to tell too much, not to reveal certain things. I am loving very much the new working dynamic between these two.

In this episode Adalind was drinking wine, it’s like she’s crossing off the list of major “no-no" for pregnant women. Stefania wants a healthy baby, so she should be more careful. Frau Pech seemed to have served her purpose, introducing Adalind to Stefania and informing Royal Families about the baby. I didn’t expect much from this plot so the twist at the end almost took me by surprise. I only guessed Stefania predicted body-swapping spell seconds before it happened. Very smart! Frau Pech would never come to her willingly and this way, looking like Adalind, she didn’t expect anything. Nicely played!

Juliette tried so really hard to fit in Nick’s world, it felt forced, awkward and so not in character. Her presence in the scenes at the spice shop was so out of place that it took all the fun out of them. I liked her more when she was on the background. The scene earlier in the episode with “How was you day?” conversation felt right, but everything that followed didn’t. It’s like writers don’t know what to do with her. I really hope the will come up with something for her to do other than running with the group and ask questions.

Grimmology

Baron’s plan was revealed and it was simple and actually made sense. Create an army of zombies and lure Grimm out. Put him in a deathlike trance and take him out of the country. It worked on every level.

Some observations

I was right last week – not just one container was filled with zombies.

Nick gave the key to Rosalee. Good thinking and right in time!

That pique gigantesque might have been the most disturbing syringe I have seen in my entire life.

According to Monroe there’s a shop in Portland that sells voodoo donuts. Of course there is.

How cool was that fight in the shipping yard!

At the end we got “To be continuing”. Again. That makes three in a row. Can we call it a three-parter?

Memorable Quotes:

Renard: “You should know that his mother tried to murder mine, and me.”
Nick: “That would make for an awkward Christmas.”

Nick: “I was reading in the books, and there is reference to one of these guys starting a revolution.
Monroe: “A revolution in Portland?”
Nick: “It might not be connected. But, the Captain's brother is in town.”
Monroe: “A member of the royal family came here? That sounds kind of revolutionary to me.”

Much more watchable together with a previous episode. Interesting set up for season three. But it wasn't as great as it could have been.
