Mary: “I don't know if I can love
anyone again, but I know I can't keep living like this. A queen but not a
queen. A wife but not a wife.”
This was a wonderful episode that opened so many new doors for pretty much every single character. From possible carrier as Madame for Greer to a more daring move to Scotland for Mary, the episode grabbed the attention and didn’t let it go. Will they act on any of it is another question.

Are they simply entertaining the idea of Mary going to Scotland? Do they
really mean to do this or is it simply to tease and torture us with what might
be? Move to Scotland
would mean a complete reset. It would also mean that some of the main
characters aren’t going be there, at least not in a full capacity. But then
again the series called Reign and it’s Mary’s, so anything is possible. If they
follow up on the plots that were started in this episode, they could easily
wrap up the French part of a story by the end of this season and have a
completely new Reign in season three. Would they dare? I’m equally terrified
and excited about this possibility.
Of all the bright futures, let’s start with Lady Greer’s, shall we? She
really is stepping up in ‘pimping’ business, although accidentally…at first. Now
she is willing to get more involved. Tell me again, why hasn’t she joined her
husband? Wouldn’t it be better than her current situation? And where is Leith? It’s now been months and he hasn’t come to visit
once.
I was on Kenna’s side throughout the episode! Yes, you heard me right!
Bash was a bit unreasonable and really neglecting his young and beautiful wife
who deserves to have something better to do with her time instead of just sit
around and wait for her husband. Surprisingly she was no match when it came to
Antoine. Though knowing he is openly flirting with her she still
underestimated him. But Bash didn’t, that’s why I though he should’ve been less
condescending and more understanding with Kenna. Like I said, I was on her
side, right up until that out of nowhere marriage proposal from Antoine. She
should’ve laughed out loud and walked away, instead she stayed and considered
all the pros (“I’m gonna be the Queen!”) and cons (“You’re married! I’m
married!”). Kenna, right when I thought you wouldn’t, you disappointed me! Again!
Now, I want to talk about my favorite person of this episode. Oh, Lola! What
an absolute delight she was! She is always quite reserved and careful and the opiates,
she has unknowingly taken, has made her loosen up a bit and enjoy the life
without boundaries. She ruined (probably for good) any chances her son had of marrying
‘that ugly baby’, she flirted with Francis though as a ‘friend’ and thrown
herself in Narcisse’s arms. How very noble of him to turn her down! Maybe he
really does care for her.
Well there is no way to avoid it, though I wish I could. Francis and Mary
have become very sad and painful to watch. Pressured to produce an heir, like
right away, Mary decided to give it a try with Francis. The idea was bad to
begin with, so no wonder the plan failed. She wasn’t ready, but more
importantly, I think, she was probably trying with the wrong man. After a
trauma like this it has to be someone that you want to be with, not have to be
with. And thought I have no doubts Francis still loves Mary, Mary on the other
hand has never been more distant. Their scenes together are so cringe worthy
and awkward it is hard to watch, whereas every conversation Mary has with Conde
is so realistically intimate, that I’m starting to think there is no way back
for our royal couple.
This was a very important episode for Mary who finally managed to stand
on her own. She refused to have an heir with a man she no longer loves, refused
to be a pawn in everybody’s game and decided to take her happiness in her own
hands.
In an interesting development, Elizabeth
wants Conde too. What a lovely surprise! Poor Conde! Finally the woman he loves
finally loves him back and asks him to ‘run away’ together and it turns out
another queen wants him at her side. He definitely will need some time to think
about his next move.
Historical bits
Marie de Guise suffered from
swelling of her legs not lumps in her lungs.
Some observations
Francis is
a good kisser! Why is that important? Hell if I know.
I liked how Catherine talked to Francis about
him having some happiness with the family he already has. For once she spoke
only as a mother, and not a queen.
Geez, Marie de Guise is one cold-hearted
mother, opiates or
not!
Bash has
finally found a mysterious woman in white that has been healing people. This
subplot is so removed from the overall story that it takes a lot of
concentration to follow it.
Wardrobe department
The “Best Dress of the week”
Award goes to Lola
The “Worst Dress of the
week” Award goes to Kenna. Sorry, Antoine, but that dress was hideous. No
wonder your wife doesn’t want to see you!
And that veil was
horrendous!
Memorable Quotes:
Lola: “He
didn't even offer me a bath. And he always offers a bath.”
Sol’s rating: From the looks of it, the French Court could survive without us.
Francis could die or find happiness with Lola, unless Lola would want that
happiness with Narcisse. Greer’s future seems secured as is Kenna's who will
either stay with Bash or marry the King of Navarre. Basically, Mary CAN go to
Schotland with Conde. It was a very good one, so 4 out of
5!
