Grimm: 5x07 “Eve of Destruction”

“I have been bent and broken, but, I hope, into a better shape”

“They call me Eve”

Yep, she’s back and judging by the opening credits she’s here to stay. Those who read my reviews know that Juliette is not a favorite, so what does it say about the episode when she is the best part of it? I was equally surprised!

From the looks of it she is still Juliette, sort of. New name, new beginning, old set of memories. What about feelings? Does she have any? She seemed way too robotic and detached….  and so obedient. It was scary. Did she really believe they saved her? Did she really find the new purpose? Or is this just a facade? No wonder Meisner looked worried at the end. She killed twenty wesen in a matter of seconds. She is a weapon alright. I’d be worried too.

Her dinner date with Nick was my favorite part of the episode. He was so vulnerable and real; David was able to portray every bit of emotion there was, from disbelief, to grief, to care, to anger. Eve on the other hand hadn’t shown anything. No remorse, no guilt, no joy. Literally nothing. She was just indifferent and icy. And the cherry on top - she was multitasking. She didn't come there just to see Nick, but to kill one of the leaders of the uprising. Meisner and Co. don't waste anytime, do they? What didn’t make sense to me is why Meisner felt he needed to put Nick through this odd auditioning process? He already knew Nick was more than capable, he also knew Nick would do anything to protect innocent bystanders. So, what was the point?

Moving on… I have to say, that during this episode Grimm women annoyed the hell out of me, all but Juliette Eve, which in itself is a nice change of pace. Take Trubel for instance, who knows way more than she lets on. She knew exactly where the secret holding facility was and she didn't share. She knew Juliette was possibly alive and she didn't think of mentioning it. She was investigating the Black Claw on her last two jobs and only now decided to talk. Plus I'm sure she knows something about Diana. Why is she dosing the information?

Next in line for annoyance award is Adalind. She was right when she said that her job as a mother is important, but she was also right when she said she has to do something else. Right now she is stuck in four walls and wining a lot about the cards she’s been dealt and saying stuff like: "I can't help but wonder if you think this should have been Juliette's child, not mine." Come on! Have some self respect, it’ like she was fishing for compliments.

But since it lead to my second favorite scene in the episode, I'll let it slide. What Nick said about him and Juliette not taking that chance at normal life was so true. I also vaguely remember something about Juliette not even wanting to marry Nick because of his Grimm powers. Which says a lot about their relationships. Grimm is a part of Nick and Adalind never had an issue with the whole package.

And then there was The Kiss. I absolutely loved how they filmed it. It was natural and a bit awkward at the same time. Looking at those two and remembering what they’ve done to each other (especially Adalind to Nick) it amazes me that I find this development so entertaining and appealing. They also talked about their feelings. Turns out they both were thinking about it! You don’t say! They’ve been sleeping next to each other for awhile now (how awhile? I’m a little fuzzy on the timeline). The important thing is that it is done. They kissed. Nick and Adalind, as themselves, for the first time. They can no longer write this off to spells and what not. There is no going back and I absolutely love this. When did I become such a shipper?

I found Rosalee annoying as well. She didn’t have much to do in this one except reacting to the news brought by others, repeating them and being on the phone a lot. Her anger towards poor Xavier was a bit over the top, I actually felt sorry for him.

The Wesen Council meeting that took place in The Hague (that was a LOL moment) turned into a blood bath when one of their members killed them all. Didn’t they have security? Didn’t they have some sort of vetting process? I'm not entirely sure what impact their execution will have on the Wesen community worldwide (huge if we are to believe Monroe), but it had no impact on me whatsoever. I kept thinking of how much more efficient another Council has been wiped out in my all time favorite ‘Buffy’ (sorry, if that is still the spoiler to you). This one was poorly written and equally poorly executed; the only good thing that came out of it was Alexander, who managed to escape. I was so relieved he survived. I still remember him in woge state – that white tiger was simply stunning. Let’s hope he’ll find his way to Portland.

And now let’s talk about the most confusing part of the story. The Black Claw. I’m still not clear on what it is they are fighting for. For Wesen to live freely and out in the open? They say it is so they could stop hiding in the shadows, but they haven't really been hiding (if they were, on more occasions that one it was because more powerful Wesen were after the weak ones). Overall it seemed Wesen and people were coexisting rather nicely for all those centuries. Oh, well.

Some observations

The Black Claw members didn’t know who Monroe was, just that he was Wesen and friends with Grimm. It’s a bit hard to believe that they didn’t know, but ok….

The destruction and riots shown on TV during Wesen Council meeting indicated that the situation in other cities are far more severe, than in Portland.

Poor Xavier - yes, he set his friends up, but still he didn’t deserve to die like that.

011 31 (0) 70 352 41 – that is the number to call if you want to get in touch with Wesen Council, not that it matters now, them being dead and all that. Anyway the country code is indeed for the Netherlands. Sometimes when a specific number is given on TV series it usually connects with some department related to it. This one doesn’t.

Meisner is seriously smitten with Adalind! I think…

Also, when he was thinking of her I kept expecting Diana to show up and call him ‘father’….

The wig came off, thankfully! It was a crime against nature.

I’m still not clear on what exactly was done to Juliette.

Memorable Quotes:

Nick: “She's either dead, or she isn't!”
Nope, it seems there is always a third option.

Monroe: “I mean, he did lead us into the Teutoburg Forest. Famous ambush of the Romans by the Germanic war chief Arminius? Three Roman legions were decimated by an alliance of Germanic Tribes? Come on, it's, like, Rome's Greatest defeat.”
Hank: “You mean like the Alamo?”
Monroe: “Yes.”
Hank’s reference was more on point… considering the revolution involved

Rosalee: “Is this another back-from-the-dead thing? 'Cause I'm really not ready to host
another jack the ripper party.”
Monroe: “Let's just hope it's not something worse.”

Adalind to Nick: “… if anything ever does, you know, get going, we should make sure it is about us.”
Amen to that

Sol’s rating: between Eve and the kiss I think it deserves 4.
