Reign: 4x12 “The Shakedown”

Henry: “In my experience, I've found it best to wait for an advantage before I strike.”

Dear Lord, seems, like we'll be waiting for ever. Despite the ‘shakedowns’, both literal and metaphorical, we haven’t moved an inch….

At one point, when Bothwell and Darnley engaged in a cat fight, I thought we're about to jump the chronological order of events and land right at Darnley's murder scene (or unfortunate death, depending on where you stand, historically speaking), but no. The chess board has not been set yet properly.

The events of this episode reminded me of a definition of insanity. Yep. All the characters kept doing the same things they were doing weeks ago, hoping to get a different result. Elizabeth and Gideon are enjoying each other’s company and playing pretend, Darnley is stuck in the constant loop of scheming, blackmailing, drinking and ‘whoring himself through Scotland’ as he promised, Charles is still damaged and mad despite the tiny spell, Henry is smartly awaiting for the right moment, Luc and Claude are doing one step forward three steps back. Basically, the same dance over and over. Different music, but the same dance.

Like I said we haven’t moved an inch. They need to speed things up a bit, since the music will stop playing in 4 episodes. There is still a huge chunk of life left and so many events, I’m wondering how they are going to do it.

Few things stood out, though….

The loyal servant of Elizabeth turned out to be a spy (I did not see it coming) and yes, Elizabeth just might have made the biggest mistake of her life. She didn’t, as we know, but it will cost her and she knew that upfront. Yet she couldn’t kill, unlike Mary who on several occasions didn’t even blink. Elizabeth has no problem giving out orders to slaughter and execute, but when it comes to actually doing it herself, she can’t.

Another one was Darnley making a deal with Knox. ‘The King’ is off, although if you look at it from his point of view, not so much. After Mary, he is the strongest dynastic claimant to Elizabeth's throne, so being denied of everything he is trying to secure his own position and future, and therefore fighting with everything he's got. One can admire his….hmm.. mission-oriented and driven character … but that would not be me. His despicable nature is repulsive, it is almost impossible to believe that any of this plans/plots were born in his drunken mind.

Historical bits

Lord Ruthven was a real person and his introduction is necessary for a certain event in a future.

Some observations

Mary said she loved Bothwell. Well, she didn’t say it say it, but she kinda did.

Catherine black magic spell backfired. Surprise!

So, who was the servant girl writing to? Who is her co-conspirator? Someone in Scotland? Darnley? Knox?

Wardrobe department

The “Best Dress of the week” Award goes to Mary.
Loved her dresses this week, designed to disguise the pregnancy; this one in particular.

With the “Worst Dress of the week” Award I'm gonna go with Claude.
I can’t put my finger on what’s wrong, but something is distinctly meh….

Memorable Quotes:

Mary: “Reverend Knox. Are you here to bring comfort to the suffering, or merely bring suffering to me?”

Gideon: “Elizabeth, you are safe. Your food is regularly tested for poison.”
Elizabeth: “Perhaps I'd feel more relaxed if my court were regularly tested for traitors.”

Greer: “And I'll talk to the kitchen staff about a menu. I believe roast pig is appropriate for the occasion.”

Catherine: “What are you doing sneaking into my chambers?”
Claude: “Returning your earrings and uncovering your pact with the devil, apparently.”
Catherine: “It wasn't a pact. It was one tiny spell. It was a good luck charm, really.”
Oh, Catherine…

Elizabeth: “Although they are quite poor and powerless, and their clothes itch. But they are free to love without fear.”

Sol’s rating: just barely 2 out of 5.
