“We don’t believe, we only fear” |
Well, I guess it was only a
matter of time before we got an exorcism a la Grimm. You could tell
by the lateness of this review, how mush I dislike any shows or movies that
involve exorcism. The unsettling factor here was that the possessed person was
a child. To hit us with something like that this close to Christmas was just
unpleasant.
Of course the exorcism
didn’t go as planned. Does it ever? The second they locked the door I knew it
was going to go south. Poor child! It is always very uncomfortable for me to
watch whenever the child or an animal is being abused or harmed in any way on
screen. Yes, they were trying to help him, and yes, he ended up killing the
priest, but from second one you could see he was scared to death and if I was
his mom I would never have left him there alone. His fear was in fact what
triggered the change and gave him strength to get away.
Seeing the boy’s face change
at the hospital made Nick step back. Come to think of it there aren’t that many
things that can make him do that. Wesen transform right in front of him all the
time and he rarely even blinks. Was it because he sort of felt this wasn’t a
regular wesen? Or was it a perfect image of how we react when we see something
that we can’t explain? We step back in fear. Then, we isolate that something
and do not let anyone come too close. Yes we do live in an enlightened age, but
whenever there is something scary that we can’t understand the solution
we still go first for is the destruction.
Even nowadays Rosalee didn’t
even bother to look for a possible treatment. I would have though she with all
the experience with potions, poisons and what not will be the one to come up
with a solution to save the boy. Yet she was the one who almost condemned him. I understand that Rosalee, like her
father and her brother before her, does serve the Council and must inform them
on some rare occasions, but why is she so terrified? She is obviously appalled
by their methods much like Monroe,
yet she continues to be driven by her fear.
Thankfully Nick wasn't, as wasn't Juliette whose medical background helped her come up with a somewhat logical explanation. They pretty quickly figured out that it was in fact just an infection that
causes demon-like physical manifestation, violent behavior and loss of memory.
Nick and Juliette were not only able to explain the actual cause but they also came up with the fairly believable treatment, so to speak. One thing I didn’t quite get - if it is just an infection why is
it so supernaturally selective? Why does it affect only children and only human
children?
Elsewhere in Austria.
The crown prince is dead. Long live another crown prince.
Who is he? Do we know him or of him? We know there are
seven royal families, so what exactly is the line of succession? I wish we knew
more about them by now, this being season 3 and all. Some background would
help tremendously.
Sean traveled to Vienna to attend the
reunion (which I initially thought was called to decide who will be the successor
to the throne, except that seemed to be already decided). To be continued...
Some observations
This episode was full of odd
German names and medical terms that I can not even pronounce.
Sean was
born on October 21st 1970 in Oregon.
Did we know that already? Does it matter?
If Sean was so eager to keep his arrival to Vienna a secret, why
on earth would he use his own passport? To make it easier on Verrat to find him?
In 1662, when the Grausen
problem sort of fell out of Grimm’s jurisdiction Wesen Council, Grimms and
Royals forged an alliance. Now three hundred years plus later it is finally no longer needed.
Wesen
Council resides in a very lovely little town… Do we know where exactly? I don’t
recall anyone mentioning it, so if I’m wrong let me know in the comments. The
location and the accents made me think of Eastern Europe….
Monroe and Rosalee weren’t
very helpful with the whole “birds and bees-wesen” talk but that was my
favorite scene in the entire episode.
Rephrasing Hank: “Let's
pretend I understood what they mean.”
So, if both parents are
wesen or if one parent is wesen and the
other is human/ Gentrager (couldn’t find what that mean) then the child will
certainly be wesen. If one parent is wesen and the other is human who knows the
truth, then there's a 50/50 chance that the child will be wesen. Check!
Nick made another inscription in Grimm’s book.
Memorable Quotes:
Juliette: “Not always easy
knowing what to believe in”
Sol’s
rating: 2 only for that scene in Spice Shop.
What do you think?
